fartings:

are you white? do you want to be popular on the internet? do I have the solution for you: just talk about how much you hate being white, works every time

by “popular”, emilee of course means “swiftly and justly butthurt”

The Price of Intolerance

This two-part article in the (Chicago) Reader is riveting. I was excited when I saw the second part was available to read today.

Oh South, you never learn.

I don’t know if everyone else is experiencing this right now, but apparently this week is the moment when my Facebook feed has started to swim with hometown nostalgia junk. Meaning, groups where people post memories of Asheville, NC (my hometown) and the people they know / knew there, shows they saw, businesses that no longer exist or have changed names, etc.

But… in true Southern fashion, there are two groups that I’ve seen pop up. One that is predominantly white. And one that is predominantly black.

Huck Finn / race

In light of all the Huckleberry Finn censorship controversy, I’ve been thinking about another (related, though not quite so obvious) issue over the last hour or so:

Do you think it’s socially appropriate (in _any_ company; saying “not around black people” is a cop-out) to use the N-word to refer to works containing it in their title?

I don’t mean just DMX songs and the like; odds are it’s not socially appropriate to refer to DMX at all. Better examples: the dub classic by Gregory Isaacs, or the John Lennon song (“Woman is the…”).

I realize that on Tumblr (especially for white indie kids being “ironically street”), that the n-word is practically at the usage level of the comma, but I’m referring to real in-person interactions here. If Tumblr were real life, there would be so much fucking and so many beatdowns that the two might become indistinguishable.

So? Opinions?
